The Bel-Air electric guitar was designed to replicate the seamless, iconic design of the classic Chevy Bel-Air.

hope to blend two concepts that uniquely and proudly symbolize 50's America: Chevrolets and Rock 'n' Roll.

FORM STUDY

Hood & Headlights

The rolling form created between the soft curvature of the hood and the extruded cylindrical headlight container is viewed at as one of the most iconic forms on the Bel Air, as well as in 50's car culture at large.

Fin

The trademarked Bel-Air Fin's sweeping, striped, metallic form is what brought the vehicle it's most enduring acclaim -- becoming a symbol for the loyalists of 50's car culture , and broader.

Side Profile & Curvature

The side profile maintains a slightly bulbous form, accented by a metallic strip that begins at the headlights and ends at the fin. The Three Gills located directly above this stripe at the front of the vehicle are another example of the design details that make this vehicle so iconic to 50's culture.

THUMBNAILS

Guitar Body

Exploration of the guitar body largely followed the form of the front end of the vehicle, mimicking the curves of the hood and headlights of the car.

REFINED SKETCHES

Building from the forms I identified through my thumbnails, I refined the design elements of the pickguard, volume knobs, as well as head shape and truck placement.

Designed to replicate the three 'gills' located on the side of the car, next to the headlights.

Knob Placement

Designed to mimick the design of the fin of the car, with the strings replicating the subtle stripes on the fin.

Pickguard

Follows the form of the headlights and hood of the car.

ORTHOGRAPHIC

Following the second round of sketching, I created a top orthographic view for the electric guitar in Adobe Illustrator.

This linework was exported into SolidoWorks as a drawing for the general floorplans.

COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN

After designing a clear concept and floorplan for the electric Bel-Air, I began working in Solidworks. All of the parts for the electric guitar were created individually -- 24 in total.

These parts were then assembled and rendered using Keyshot.

The main parts created for the body are diagrammed to the left.

RENDERINGS

The 32 Solidworks parts were then exported individually and rendered with speckled acryllic teal paint.

All renderings were completed with Keyshot 8.
